Exposition. The Museum of Ethnography and Sciences of Jumilla hosts an exhibition on the actor and voice actor José Guardiola on the occasion of the first centenary of his birth
In the filmography of José Guardiola, actor and Jumillano dubber who died in 1988, there are more than forty films, some of them directed by well-known directors, such as Mario Camus (‘The Holy Innocents’), and a long list of works related to the cinema and theater. On the occasion of the centenary of his birth, next Saturday, December 18 at 6.30 p.m., the exhibition ‘José Guardiola, actor and voice’ will be opened at the Jerónimo Molina de Jumilla Museum of Ethnography and Sciences, which will be exhibited in the Usage Room multiple until January 30.
José Guardiola was born in the Plaza de Arriba in Jumillana in 1921 and is known especially for his work in dubbing: he is the voice of Humphrey Bogart that we hear in ‘Casablanca’ and ‘The African Queen’, among many other films; it is also that deep, confident voice, united by dubbing actors like Michel Piccoli, Richard Widmark, Richard Burton, Lee Marvin or so many other ‘toughs’ from American and European cinema.
Together with great directors
But Guardiola’s career is more extensive. He participated in television series, in plays and in more than forty films as an actor before the camera, filming under the orders of directors such as Donald Siegel, Vicente Escrivá or Berlanga, as well as Buñuel. Also with fellow cast members such as Zsa-Zsa Gabor, Lee Remick, Michel Piccoli, Ornella Muti, Ricardo Montalban, Rod Taylor, Toto or Louis de Funès, Carmen Sevilla, Alfredo Landa, Manolo Zarzo, Aurora Bautista, Jorge Mistral, Carlos Larrañaga , Emma Penella, Concha Velasco, Agustín González and the aquiline Paco Rabal; even with Kubala himself.
The exhibition, curated by Pedro Quílez and José de Paco, will offer a journey through José Guardiola’s film career through numerous large-format photographs and others taken from the films in which he participated, as well as original documents that speak of the actor and a collection of family photographs.
