It was in 2017 when the duo Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo was consecrated with The call: adaptation of a low-budget musical that they had created themselves. The resulting film was a small phenomenon, but the Javis They did not take advantage of it to build a career in film: in fact they specialized with their production company. Suma Content in the realization of increasingly ambitious series.
Arrive Paquita Salasarrive Poison and then in 2023 came what many consider the Javis masterpiece, The Messiah. In between they put their signature on many other projects as producers, but since The call They had not tried their luck with the feature film again.
This is about to change with The black ball: a project that Ambrossi and Calvo have just presented at the headquarters of Movistar+in the building Telephone. Movistar+ is, in fact, the big studio involved, which will produce their second film as directors.
The black ball is a “vindication queer of a part of the history of our country,” declare the Javis. They describe the film as “authorial”, “ambitious” and a “great production”, with the aim of exploring “what it means be a faggot over time.” The Javis attribute to this “black ball” a character of stigma that would be “our scarlet letter”, intended to publicly point out to the collective LGTBIQ+.
The most interesting thing about The black ball is that it is based on a lost or unfinished work of Federico García Lorcaof which only the characters and the first four pages are known. Starting from it, the Javis have developed a script that explores “the wounds of three men in three different moments: 1932, 1937 and 2017”.
As is natural The black ball has never been taken to the stage before, but it is worth remembering that in 2015 it inspired a play inspired by it, titled The dark stone.
The Javis have not given any further details about how they have expanded the story, nor about the performers they will recruit to accompany them.
