The Javis announce their next film, ‘The Black Ball’, an unfinished work by Lorca that “revisits the history of Spain from a queer perspective”

Movistar Plus+ announced this Wednesday its original projects for 2025, with which it tries to consolidate its commitment to Spanish cinema. Among the most notable is the next film by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, the filmmaking duo known as the Javis, titled The black ball.

It is a lost or unfinished work of Federico García Lorca of which some characters and the first four pages are known. It will be a “vindication queer of a part of the history of our country,” the filmmakers explained during the presentation at the Movistar Plus+ headquarters, in the Teléfonica Building in Madrid. They have described it as “authorial”, “ambitious” and a “great production”.

The film will address “the wounds” of three men in three different moments: 1932, 1937 and 2017. There they will tell us “what it means to be a faggot over time,” they have expressed. “The black ball It is the symbol of rejection,” the directors have said, “it is our scarlet letter,” in relation to the stigmas or public shame that a society carries.

Ambrossi and Calvo hope to “revisit the history of Spain from the queer” with the premiere of his second film after The call (2017), as they have emphasized. This film will come after the great success of Calvo and Ambrossi with the series The Messiah, that came anticipated by two others, Poison and Paquita Salas.

This is not the first time that Lorca’s unfinished work has been developed. In 2015, Alberto Conejero premiered his work The dark stone directed by Pablo Messiez for the National Dramatic Center, which is the second title that the Granada poet gave to that story. The “black ball” is the voting method used in the Granada Casino to prevent the registration of a boy for being homosexual.

On the other hand, after the success of its first series, WantAlauda Ruiz de Azúa is also now returning to the cinema with Sundays. The film presents Ainara, an idealistic and brilliant young woman who has to decide what university degree she will study. Or, at least, that’s what her family hopes she will do, but she believes her future may lie somewhere else. His family, bewildered, will be divided over how to act.

The new film by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa will star Patricia López Arnaiz, Miguel Garcés, Juan Minujín, Mabel Rivera and Nagore Aramburu, introducing the young Blanca Soroa. It will begin filming in February in different locations in Bizkaia. “I am very excited, I feel that there is something very special in this project,” says the director, who confesses that, in some way, Five Little Wolves and Want They are “bricks of the house” of Sundays.

Another of the platform’s bets will be The Tigersa thriller starring Antonio de la Torre and Bárbara Lennie in which two brothers, Antonio and Estrella, who work in the world of industrial diving, find themselves involved in a complicated plot that will put them to the test. It will be released in theaters and will later reach the platform.

The film will be directed by Alberto Rodríguez and Rafael Cobos. “On a shoot there is always a moment when you stop and think: what am I doing here? During this film I have asked myself this many times,” says Alberto Rodríguez. “I am very happy, because I think we have managed to preserve the idea of making a film with a big engine, but with a simple and long-lasting fuel: emotion,” he comments.

Likewise, after his success with the acclaimed series The new yearsRodrigo Sorogoyen confirms that he is working on a feature film with Isabel Peña. It will star Javier Bardem and Victoria Luengo, and will tell how an acclaimed film director and his daughter, an unsuccessful actress, make a film together after years of estrangement and a difficult past that neither of them has wanted to talk about.

The loved one It is a film that talks about the story. About how we relate to ourselves as individuals and as a society,” says Rodrigo Sorogoyen. “But it is also a film about people who make films, about human beings whose job is to tell stories. That they tell and tell each other. And, at its most intimate level, The loved one “It is a story about a father and a daughter who have to live with each other’s story,” declares the filmmaker.
