70 Japanese citizens have agreed to join the Ukrainian Foreign Legion, most of them are former servicemen of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, the newspaper reported. Mainichi with reference to sources at the Ukrainian Embassy in Tokyo.
“We know that the Ukrainian embassy in Japan calls for volunteers [для участия в спецоперации на стороне ВСУ]but regardless of the goal, we ask citizens not to travel to Ukraine,” Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi commented on the situation.
It is reported that 50 Japanese served in the Japan Self-Defense Forces, two served in the French Foreign Legion. The decision to send them will be made after consultations between the Ukrainian diplomatic mission and the Japanese government. The embassy did not rule out that volunteers could be sent exclusively for humanitarian activities, without participating in the operation.
