Ukrainian troops continue to strike in the area of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in Energodar. Military correspondent of the Izvestia TV channel Roman Polshakov visited the site of the shelling on August 25 and assessed the situation after two power units at the station were switched off today.
According to him, the entire area around the ZNPP was covered in smoke. Smoke is observed in the area due to the fact that forests and fields are burning around. Firefighters continue to work to extinguish the fire, but the situation is greatly exacerbated by the wind.
“After the impact of the APU, the grass caught fire, the fire spread to the trees. Due to the strengthening of the wind, the fire began to spread at lightning speed. Because of this, there was a short circuit, ”said Alexander Volga, head of the military-civilian administration (CAA) of Energodar, to the journalist.
He noted that specialists have already reconnected the electricity transmission line. While the work was being carried out, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions were temporarily left without electricity. At the moment, all emergency measures have been completed.
Earlier in the day, Volga reported that after a power outage at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, security systems went off. According to preliminary data, there was a short circuit in the network, which led to a massive fire in the field and undergrowth. As a result, the indicators of the energy system completely sank.
Energodar, Melitopol and Kherson were left without power supply. According to the correspondent of the Izvestia TV channel, communications also worked intermittently in the cities.
In just one day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) delivered 17 strikes at the Zaporozhye NPP.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and the authorities of Energodar have repeatedly announced the shelling of the nuclear power plant, which is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Attacks from the APU became more frequent in August. They did not disrupt the operation of the reactors, however, they led to damage to the cooling system pools. Shell hits were also noted near the storage of radioactive isotopes.
Zaporozhye NPP was taken under the protection of Russian forces as part of a special military operation (SVO). As Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya noted on August 11 during a meeting of the UN Security Council, the withdrawal of the Russian military from the facility could turn into a disaster, since Kyiv could use the station for monstrous provocations.
