The left-wing newspaper Haaretz reported that the investigation is focusing on an incident that occurred in the town of Be'eri, one of the sites most affected in the attack, where a tank bombed a house, killing 12 Israelis who were detained by Hamas gunmen.
She added that the investigation was postponed due to the demands of the four-month-long war in Gaza, but with the slowdown in fighting, army leaders felt that the time had come to conduct an investigation.
In response to a question to confirm that an investigation would look into the incident, the IDF press office sent a statement confirming that an investigation had been conducted, without providing further details.
“The IDF is activating the fact-finding and evaluation mechanism to examine reports and complaints regarding violations of Israeli and international law during the fighting,” the army said in a statement.
Reuters quoted the statement as saying that the fact-finding mission is in its early stages, but investigators have begun collecting materials.
Once the investigation is completed, all materials will be handed over to the Military Prosecutor's Office, who will decide whether there are grounds for the military police to open an investigation.
The Israeli army said it was “committed to conducting a comprehensive review and investigation.”
About 1,200 Israelis and foreigners were killed in the attack carried out by thousands of militants led by Hamas, according to Israeli statistics.
The militants took more than 240 hostages to Gaza.
