During the weekend Diego Santilli, who heads one of the lists of Together for Change that will compete in the September PASO in the province of Buenos Aires with the radical Facundo Manes, had boasted that it would be “a primary for gentlemen, of ideas, of projects, of people’s issues ”and that the adversary would be Kircherism. 48 hours after the closing of the lists, the start of the campaign turned into a tough crossroads.
In different statements, Manes made it clear that he has presidential ambitions, and does not intend to keep quiet about anything even if his darts are aimed at his own partners in the opposition.
The first message he sent to the head of the City government, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, and his competitor Santilli – who resigned from all his positions – was “do not spend the taxes of the porteños in the campaign.”
“This intern is David versus Goliath. I hope that the taxes of the porteños are not spent on the campaign, “said the neuroscientist in an interview with the newspaper. The nation and in a clear reference to Larreta’s commitment to the province of Buenos Aires, outside the district he governs.
But there is more. Earlier on radio Miter, he challenged that they intend “from various sectors, not only the UCR, Peronism, the GEN, from different sectors, to give a new identity to the opposition coalition and I would like to discuss with Santilli every week ”.
And they were not the only definitions of an active day of the radical candidate. In a clear chicane to his PRO rivals, which seems to anticipate a dispute that could occur in 2023 if Manes is well positioned in the September PASO and in the November elections, he launched: “I would like to debate with Rodríguez Larreta and Santilli because I am not clear about the country project they want”.
Horacio Rodríguez Larreta with Cristian Ritondo, in Parque Chacabuco. The head of the PRO block in Deputies came out in defense of the head of Government
The first to get to the bone against the neuroscientist was Cristian Ritondo, who showed his fiercest sarcasm on social networks by ironizing that Manes with his opinions seemed more like a candidate from the Frente de Todos than from the opposition and by accusing him of sowing “distrust ” in the space.
“Facundo, you say that you arrive to get the best out of the Argentine potential but you only sow mistrust and doubts in your own space,” the head of the PRO block crossed him in Deputies. Immediately, Ritondo finished off the answer: “Do not fall into the worst customs of the old politics if you want renewal. The Front of All no longer needs more candidates”, He concluded, without half measures.
Neither Rodríguez Larreta nor Santilli are going to answer Manes. In their environment they made it clear that “we do not always focus on Kirchnerism.”
However, with Manes’ offensive, Rodríguez Larreta knows better than anyone that he is facing a tough challenge. Since although he managed to order the candidacies in the PRO and make foot with Santilli in the province of Buenos Aires, if Manes defeats the larretismo, he will be outlined for discuss the 2023 presidential candidacy to the mayor of the City.
Who also came out with the caps against the brand new radical candidate was the national deputy of the PRO for the Buenos Aires district Martín Medina. “Manes, the lists closed on Saturday and the Frente de Todos has Victoria Tolosa Paz as a candidate.” And with an emoticon of a face winking, he continued, “champion, you are a candidate in PBA or you are an opponent of Kicillof, I reread your book to me ‘Argentine brain‘”.
Carrió, the first to aim against Manes
However, this intersection has a precedent: the harsh statements by Elisa Carrió, who brings several members of the Civic Coalition on the list headed by Santilli, against the neuroscientist.
A day before the closing of lists, Carrió questioned the conditions of Manes to occupy a seat in Congress. He argued that he “knows neuroscience”, but something else is “to defend the Nation in Congress” and explained that to go to parliament “you have to know how to read, write and write an article of a law.”
Although it was not the worst thing he said. A month ago he had opined that “that boy who now wants to enter politics, for Manes,” wants to arrive by helicopter “to the presidency in two years.
