In New York City, the prisoners of the Rikers Island prison live a veritable hell. This prison has passed from the film producer Harvey Winstein to the swindler Ana Sorokin, who has inspired the new Netflix series ‘Inventing Anna’.
Rikers is a jail complex that has eight buildings and is located on an island near Manhattan on the East River. An investigation by the newspaper ‘The New York Times’ revealed that the prison system in this place was in chaos that worsened with the pandemic. Here the detainees supervise various segments and the guards refuse to appear and make disciplinary policies.
The dark reality of Rikers
The executive director of the New York City Independent Commission on Criminal Justice and Incarceration Reform told the Times: “Rikers has long been dysfunctional, decrepit and dangerous.”
According to the aforementioned media, in this place there have been cases where a detainee hijacked a bus and rammed a building. On another occasion, one grabbed an officer’s keys to cut his face and neck, and another inmate tore down the grate of his cell to stab a man in the next cell.

This prison houses more than 4,800 detainees, and most are awaiting trial and have not been convicted of any crime. Although most of the inmates are not dangerous, in the past year more than 12 detainees died, making it the deadliest year in the prison system from the city.
In 2019, the New York City council voted to close the ‘Rikers’ complex and replace it with four different correctional buildings. Retired Judge Jonathan Lippman, at the time, issued recommendations ranging from pre-trial release of more people to the complete closure of the island.
That judge, in that same year, referred to a suicide that occurred in the prison of convict Kalief Browder, who was accused of stealing a backpack. This death set off the alarms even more and began to talk more about this reform.
Riker’s problems
According to the Times investigation, the prison is in “total anarchy” which is difficult to fathom. “Detainees in some buildings have taken almost total control over entire unitsdeciding who can come and go, records and interviews show,” the newspaper reported.
Also, they add “In other buildings, they have entered and exited the staff break rooms and restricted areas in a similar way, with some rules against smoking tobacco and marijuana.”
