Atheyna Bylon has had fewer problems on the world’s ring than she has encountered on the streets of her native Panama City.
The world boxing runner-up in the 75-kilogram category, who won the gold medal this Thursday at the Valledupar 2022 Bolivarian Games, belongs to the National Police of her country.
“You always have problems, but try to handle them”, says, unable to contain her laughter, the 33-year-old woman who always attracts attention, at first glance, with her 1.79 meters tall and dark skin.
“There are so many problems,” he replies when asked which one he remembers the most.
“In Panama, being a police officer you have to stand firm or else they ‘send’ you (they sabotage)… Thank God we have turned out well”.

The Boxing Police
He has been in the institution for 13 years and his rank is Second Sergeant. She had many problems before, but now that she is recognized, people respect her and treat her with love.
She has earned this recognition in boxing, obtaining medals for her country in different tournaments, which earned her, for example, being the flag bearer for Panama, last year, at the Tokyo Olympics, where she obtained an Olympic diploma.
That time she lost to British Lauren Price, the same one she had eliminated at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.
On May 20, in Istanbul, she played the final of the 75 kilos at the world level, losing to the Canadian Tamara Thibeault, who had beaten her weeks before in Guayaquil, in the final of the continental tournament.
Raised in the populous sector of San Miguelito, birthplace of great Panamanian world champions, Bylon was never interested in boxing. She never saw him. She entered her practice at the insinuation of her colleagues from the National Police.
“I won many medals, but I didn’t like it, I only did it to please them… But since I like to do things well, I always, over time, fell in love with it”, says the admirer of the Panamanian boxing world champions who, she admits, none of them caught her attention to be in the sport.

A woman from the National Police should protect the citizens, but in boxing she punishes them, we tell her. Again she smiles. “I do it sportingly. I don’t bring aggressiveness to the ring, because otherwise I wouldn’t be able to do things well”.
Married nine years ago to the Olympic wrestler Álex Pineda, and a member of a family that includes a mother, sisters and nieces, Atheyna Bylon hopes to have children after the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“I have to keep throwing fists to get a world title and an Olympic medal in Paris. Then the children will come”finish.
