Rectorate and unions have signed the document this Friday in an act that took place in the Convalescence
The University of Murcia has presented this Friday its II Equality Plan in the field of personnel, the result of the negotiation carried out during the last seven months with the union organizations, according to sources from the educational institution in a statement.
This document delves into the commitments already established by the first plan and broadens its horizons in all areas related to gender equality, placing special emphasis on those that seek to reduce the wage gap and favor joint responsibility, two aspects whose imbalances they were evidenced in the diagnosis prior to the drafting of this plan.
The signing of the document has taken place in the Convalescence, headquarters of the Rectorate, and has been initialed by the rector, José Luján, and the union organizations CCOO, CSIF, SIME and UGT. The event was directed by the director of the Unit for Equality between Women and Men, Professor Carmen Sánchez Trigueros.
The II Equality Plan proposes concrete measures to increase the number of women at the forefront of teaching and research innovation groups because, currently, the presence of women at the fore only reaches 30%. A review of scales in cases of tie and the specific call for projects for teams of equal composition, but led by women, are two of these proposals.
With regard to representation in the governing bodies of the institution, the previous diagnosis made confirms that there is a clear gender difference in single-person positions, as well as an unbalanced presence in the different governing bodies. In this area, the plan recommends that any closed list presented to representative bodies be equal and drawn up with the ‘rack’ formula, which alternates between men and women. It is also advised that the appointment of positions of trust maintain this objective of parity.
The balanced presence of both genders among the teaching staff of the different degrees is also included in this plan, which confirms that there are highly feminized or masculinized careers.
In order not to perpetuate the problem of stereotypes, which also extends to the practice of certain professions, the plan recommends that the academic centers of the University of Murcia carry out measures to disseminate the achievements of those of the sex with less representation in those fields of knowledge; as well as carrying out dissemination actions in high school and secondary schools with the aim of breaking gender stereotypes in certain degrees.
Reducing and eliminating the salary gap between staff is also one of the central objectives of the plan; something that occurs both among administration and services staff as well as teaching and research staff. To alleviate this situation, the need to establish flexible hours with regard to presence is included to encourage professional tasks to be compatible with co-responsible work and family reconciliation.
The measures relating to work-life balance include promoting flexible and adapting systems of physical presence in working hours, both for the PAS and for the PDI, for reasons of taking care of family tasks, especially in single-parent families.
Carrying out campaigns that remind staff of the reconciliation measures and programs that exist at the University of Murcia is another of the specific actions that are established along with holding meetings at times compatible with family tasks or ensuring that the childcare center open every afternoon. Also included is the guarantee that teachers due to paternity or maternity leave do not have to do homework during their period of leave.
Gender perspective in studies
Another of the central aspects of this II Equality Plan of the University of Murcia is to ensure that gender mainstreaming in university policy and also in the field of teaching, achieving the implementation of specific subjects on gender training or by introducing transversal content in the subjects.
In this sense, the plan includes the commitment to develop an orientation framework on the basic aspects related to gender equality so that they can be adapted by the academic committees to each degree or discipline.
A basic guide will also be developed to help teachers understand how the gender perspective can be applied in their activity, with clear and simple instructions. In the field of staff training, the objective of continuing to promote the offer of courses with gender perspectives is introduced.
Since the preparation of the I Equality Plan, measures and practices have been introduced with the intention of refining the use of a non-sexist language in the university environment, as well as to apply an institutional image in all areas away from gender roles and stereotypes .
These actions are now part of the II Equality Plan that includes, among other issues, the commitment to carry out training courses on non-sexist image and inclusive language in all groups. Specific measures are also included to facilitate that the use of graphic images that is made in the different services and departments of the institution are in line with the fight against sexist stereotypes.
The prevention of violence against women and harassment is also included in this plan with the inclusion of actions to disseminate existing instruments, such as the “Protocol for the prevention, detection and action against sexual harassment, based on sex,” by sexual orientation and gender identity and / or expression of the University of Murcia ”, and the launching of awareness campaigns on both issues.
This II Igualad Plan has a four-year application and the implementation of the measures will start from the 2021/2022 academic year.
