Everything pointed to tragedy. “We have an aggressive host that He’s high and he’s destroying his room.. We need someone to come, we don’t know if their life is in danger […] “His bedroom has a balcony and we are afraid he might do something.” These were the brief and clear words of a member of the staff at Casa Sur, a four-star hotel in Palermo (Buenos Aires) when calling Emergency, minutes before Liam Payne jumps into the void from the third floor 14 meters high. The doctors, upon arrival, could only testify to the singer’s death.
In his fleeting 31 years of life, Payne, known for being one of the five members of One Direction (the most successful boyband of the 21st century), had had time to reach the peak of fame and also to know the worst side of abuses and excesses. Those previous hours were nothing more than a warning of the misfortune that would be confirmed at half past six in the afternoon, Spanish midnight.
A smashed television, remains of drugs and anxiolytics, a bottle of whiskeyan unfinished glass of champagne, aluminum foil, trash on the floor and in the bathtub, a lighter, and burn marks on the furniture. The images of how the hotel room turned out leave no doubt that Payne’s condition hours before his death was terrible.
The Argentine Police reported a “total disorder” after the search after his death. The agents took fingerprints and other evidence to be analyzed in laboratories, as well as a notebook and a passport.
According to what has emerged, the singer had caused a scandal at the reception of the building, under the influence of drugs. When he went up to his room, the screaming and hitting continued, and then the call came. “When he is conscious, he destroys his room”; “Send someone, we don’t know if their life is in danger”; «The bedroom has a balcony and we are afraid that something might happen». It was in vain.
«Send only SAME, only SAME!»he exclaimed, clearly nervous, in a second call, minutes later. SAME is Argentina’s Emergency Medical Care System. The singer had already rushed into the void. There was nothing to do.
The preliminary autopsy confirms that he had multiple traumas and hemorrhages. internal and external, according to what a Police source has assured AFP. Payne had “very serious injuries incompatible with life product of his fall (…). There was no possibility of resuscitation,” according to the head of the Emergency Service, Alberto Crescenti. The fall occurred from a height “of around 13 or 14 meters,” he added. “Apparently he had a skull base fracture.”
