The Horner 'case' and modern F1
Even more than the results on the track, this very first part of the 2024 Formula 1 season was characterized by internal events within the Red Bull team. The investigation conducted within the company it concerned Christian Horner for some alleged harassment of an employee and which – for the moment – ended with the full acquittal of the Milton Keynes team principal, held sway in the paddock for a long time, also causing a whole series of conflicts within the world champion team which had remained under the radar for the last year.
Collateral events like these have made some 'purists' turn up their noses, who would prefer to talk only about what happens in the race, but inevitably the narrative of current F1 is also the result of the success of the Netflix documentary series Drive to Survive, who for several years now has been trying to follow the 'behind the scenes' of the Circus, often fictionalizing some events for narrative purposes. Nothing better therefore, for a product of this kind, than a true scandal that seems to have all the ideal characteristics for a TV series. Precisely in this regard the English site TheTelegraph interviewed the British film producer James Gay-Reeswho is one of the creators of Drive to Survive.
Material to be handled with care
Regarding the Horner affair, which is very sensitive because it goes beyond the sporting aspect and touches the private sphere of all the people involved, Gay-Rees confirmed that the topic will be covered in the next season of Drive to Survivebut trying to use a measurement that is correct from all points of view: “It will have to be cited somehow – confirmed the producer – and everyone will want it to be told in a particular way, so it's about finding a boundary to please everyone. We have to please Netflix and we also have to please ourselves, so we can sleep at night with the decisions we've made“.
“You have to have a balance – he continued – I think Horner is okay for now, but it doesn't feel like it's all over yet. Everything will depend on how the story ends. I don't know what he did and I don't have an opinion on it, but He's been through a lot and I wouldn't wish it on anyone“. Regarding the affair, Rees revealed that he had received a message from Horner himself, who jokingly 'accused' him for the great outcry caused by his case, perhaps also due to the appeal generated by products such as Drive to Survive: “That's what Christian told me: 'It's all your fault'“commented.
