Some manufacturers like to brag about how they make their cars for motoring enthusiasts, others prefer to emphasize how their latest elegantly mangled crossover keeps families happy. But for many households, there’s another family member that needs attention (especially to keep them from puking up in the boot). Someone who hardly got that attention until Honda presented the Honda Wow Concept at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show.
The name stood for ‘Wonderfully Open-hearted Wagon’, which honors a long Japanese tradition of totally meaningless but friendly car names. It was intended to “bring people and their dogs closer together,” cramming them together in a small car for long journeys. Just what every Fikkie wants, right?
Fully equipped, for your dog
The Honda Wow Concept was designed to be easily accessible, with low wooden floors (genius: open the doors and all the hair just flies out) and room for six. Or actually four and a dog. The middle row could be transformed into a kind of crate for your four-legged friend. Preferably a little one – we don’t know how wonderfully open hearted your Saint Bernard would feel in it. But Honda (haha, Hond-a) had thought of everything: there was even an externally accessible compartment in the back where you could hang your dog toys.
If Wieiserdanzo’s brave boy preferred to sit in the front, where the action was, then the Honda Wow provided it with a kind of zippered compartment where the glove compartment would normally be, complete with a flexible air-conditioning hose that you could fit right on its panting head. aim. A post near the B-pillar could be used as a tie-down spot, as could various points on the bumpers, if Fifi preferred to wait outside until you’d done the shopping.
The Honda Wow can be even greener
Don’t forget to unhook before you leave. Or grab a few sled dogs and let yourself be dragged through the city without a motorcycle; very green, and something different than having to charge your EV every time. We could go on all day about the strange finds, like the front that is supposed to look like a dog (?), or how the bottom of the sliding doors was made of glass so that dogs could see out too.
Unfortunately, dogs don’t have the purchasing power that Honda was hoping for. Or maybe reactions from angry cat lovers prevented the brand from following through with the Honda Wow. Nissan tried it again in 2017 with the X-Trail 4Dogs, but it never went into production. It convinced Land Rover and Aston Martin that there was a market for premium accessories for their clientele’s best friends. But still a shame about the Wow – has there ever been a more dog-friendly car?
