The head of the Bessonteam mountain guide team, Igor Besson, said in an interview with Izvestia that the tourists who died in Kamchatka might not be ready for the ascent. He also talked about how mountain climbing should be organized correctly.
Besson noted that licensing and accreditation of guides for mountain routes are well developed in Europe, while in Russia mountain climbing licenses are only being worked out by the government. He also added that for a team that decides to conquer any serious mountain, it is necessary to have certain training, as well as fill out a special questionnaire.
“The questionnaire indicates height, weight, questions about training. It all starts with physical preparation. Then the most important thing when forming a team is moral and volitional qualities. They are tested in a team when the whole group gathers together, and at meetings, when they get to know each other, they talk about each other. The preparation for the ascent, the acclimatization period begins,” the guide said.
The guide also talked about how important it is to “merge” the team.
“If the team is not well-coordinated, and not prepared, and climbs“ where it is not necessary ”with ambitions and with requirements for the guide that it should not require, discipline violates, then it is necessary to distinguish between a tourist route and a mountain route,” he said.
Besson also added that now very few people pay attention to the preparation of the group and the guides themselves.
“Often the guys go “on the edge of a knife” when they go to the mountains with poorly trained guides,” the expert concluded.
Earlier that day, five tourists died while climbing the Klyuchevskoy volcano in Kamchatka, and two more people were injured.
The ascent to the summit was made by a group of tourists of 12 people who came from different cities of Russia. Nine people from the group started climbing from a height of 3300 m, while the rest remained in the camp. At around 4 thousand 158 m, several people fell into the abyss.
A helicopter with rescuers on board was sent to the scene. They will advance to the height where the tragedy occurred on the morning of September 4th.
A criminal case has been initiated into the incident.
