Both Betis and Sevilla have made a change of cycle this summer. Many new faces in both squads and many goodbyes have taken place in the last year. Whims of fate, this renewal of both Sevillian clubs has caused Sergio Canales to end up sharing a dressing room with Lucas Ocampos and Óliver Torres at Rayados de Monterrey.

Although the Cantabrian arrived last season, a long-term injury caused his adaptation to Mexican football to be delayed. However, the former Betic player has assured on Canal Sur Radio that he is in a great moment this year: «On an individual level I feel quite good, I have already scored 20 goals. I was injured for four months, I had to have surgery practically as soon as I arrived. And now I’m happy, it’s not an easy change for any player who comes from Spain and here there is a level that demands a lot from you physically. I play to win and to be champion. “I think I’m growing a lot because I’m playing in a very vertical way, dribbling a lot.”

An adaptation in which the former Sevillistas are currently Ocampos and Óliver Torreswhich arrived in Monterrey this past summer. Questioned about how it is to be teammates when they have been rivals for so many years, Canales has assured that they are a true pineapple: “We all want the same thing, we want to win. As teammates I am delighted, we have connected very well on the field. The other day Ocampos gave me two assistsIt is a pleasure to be with them on a daily basis. Lucas is super competitive on the field, but in the locker room he is a very good teammate. A great piece of bread to have as a companion, although it is true that at first something is shocking. We were rivals, enemies to the utmost and well now circumstances change. That’s also the beauty of football. We go in the car together a lot, we live nearby… we have the human capacity to understand that we want to be champions. Furthermore, I respect that maximum competitiveness.”

Happy in Rayados

The player also wanted to deny the rumors that once again linked him to Betis and has assured that he feels very happy in Mexico: «I am very happy in Rayados, it has far exceeded the expectations I had with the change. I am happy with the experience I am having, very grateful for what I am experiencing, meeting wonderful people. Having left the comfort zone, it is true that at the beginning there are situations where the crash was big, but once I have adapted, I am happy on a family and sporting level.

Furthermore, Canales has highlighted the differences between Spanish and Mexican football: «Very different football, I feel like it is helping me grow. I was also looking for that when I made the change. They are totally different situations, ways of seeing the game or understanding the situations. Above all, a very physical game, a lot of work is done here on that. The games are very open, there are many transitions… I talked about it with Lucas (Ocampos) and Óliver (Torres), the truth is that it is difficult to adapt. There are also high-quality players, especially in attack, players who surprise you. I am enjoying it a lot because it is very fun, they are very open matches… you are winning 3-0 and you have to push because they quickly come back from behind.”

Regarding his new club, the Cantabrian has assured that they are very ambitious and that they seek reach the top in all competitions: «Rayados as an institution is very large, all top quality. In that sense I am very lucky. The city I am in is also impressive, it is very quiet and the people are very nice. The club really wants to continue growing, it is always aiming to be champion and now it is pushing hard. Now there is a club World Cup ahead, which is something very important for everyone who goes, and we are working very well to arrive in the best way.
