The Greek government stated on Thursday the state of emergency in Santorini due to the wave of Magnitude of up to 5.2 that shake the island for almost two weeks, which has caused the massive escape of its inhabitants.
The state of emergency, announced by Civil Protection in a statement, will remain in force at least until March 1 and is declared in order to immediately attend to any urgent need that has been presented on the island.
According to the News247 portal, the statement makes possible the rapid infrastructure construction to safeguard the stability of the volcanic boiler of the island without public tender or other requirements provided by law in normal situations.
The Natural Disaster Management professor, Effthimis Lekkas, already warned on Wednesday that there is a “high risk” that landslides from all the boiler are registered, on the edge of which the capital of Santorini is built, Fira, and one of its largest villages, Oia.
During the last days, at least 11,000 people have abandoned the island for fear of a major earthquake and the only ones that remain are very few tourists with some 4,000 residents.
Santorini, who normally receives more than three million tourists a year, officially has about 15,000 residents, although it is estimated that another 10,000 people live there without being registered.
More than 6,400 fits have been recorded in the maritime zone between Santorini and Amorgos between January 26 and February 3, of which about 800 had a magnitude greater than 2.5, according to the Seismology Laboratory of the University of Athens .
The earthquakes have not stopped Thursday. Dozens of a lot of a magnitude between 1.2 and 4.6 shake these two islands of the Cycled Archipelago, in the Aegean Sea.
The Greek prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who has repeatedly asked the islanders who “keep calm”, will go tomorrow Friday to Santorini together with the Minister of Civil Protection, Vasilis Kikilias, the Skai station reported today.
The emergency teams found on the island have been reinforced during the last hours.
A helicopter and four ships of the Coast Guard, in addition to 21 vessels such as tugboats, large fisheries and ferris, are on alert in the area.
Meanwhile, the Central Union of the Chambers of Commerce of Greece (KEEE) asked the government on Thursday to “support economicly and institutionally” the inhabitants of Santorini, since they estimate that the Ladies will have a negative impact in the medium and long term on the economy in the economy of the island, whose main engine is tourism.
The majority of seismologists and geologists indicate that the possibilities of an earthquake from a magnitude greater than 6 are few, although they agree that we will probably continue to shake the island for a few weeks, perhaps months.
This seismic activity is due to the movement of tectonic plates in the underwater Ánydros fault, located between Santorini and Amorgos, and not to the two volcanoes in the area, although this does not mean that the tremors cannot rekindle volcanic activity, according to the experts.
