The animal was guarded overnight by agents from the Ministry of the Environment, who inspected the area on Tuesday morning and found that it was no longer there.
The gray seal found on Monday afternoon by two neighbors while walking along a beach in the El Portús area, in the municipality of Cartagena, returned by itself to the Mediterranean Sea on Tuesday. This was confirmed to THE TRUTH by sources from the Ministry of the Environment, who explained that environmental agents inspected the environment and verified that this marine specimen was no longer there.
They also pointed out that officials from the Ministry and technicians from the Center for the recovery of wildlife in the Region of Murcia made the decision on Monday to leave the seal where it arrived and maintain surveillance for a few hours. In an approach to the seal to find out its condition, the animal showed “certain aggressiveness.” Faced with this rejection of the human approach, the specialists chose to wait for the seal to rest.
The seal found this Monday in El Portús. /
In the Autonomous Community they agreed that, as the president of the Association of Naturalists of the Southeast of Spain (Anse), Pedro García, commented the previous day, the indications suggest that it is the same specimen that became disoriented days ago in the Grenada coast. For now, the reasons for the loss of this animal, which belongs to a species not seen on the coast of Cartagena since the 1990s, are unknown.
