The multibillion-dollar fine in connection with the fuel spill in Norilsk demonstrates Rosprirodnadzor’s readiness to respond appropriately to such situations. This is how Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko assessed the relevant court decision, reports TASS on Tuesday, August 10th.
“This court decision is direct evidence that no violation in the field of ecology will remain without a proper response,” she said.
Earlier, the court recovered 146 billion rubles from Norilsk Nickel due to the accident at the thermal power station. Thus, the record claim of Rosprirodnadzor in the amount of about 148 billion rubles was partially satisfied.
The accident occurred at the end of May 2020. One of the fuel tanks at the Norilsk CHPP-3, which belonged to a subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel, collapsed due to subsidence of the storage pillars. As a result of depressurization, over 20 thousand tons of oil products have spilled out.
