The Government spent more than two million on the conditioning works of the barracks that the Ministry of Defense gave in Madrid to accommodate migrants, due to the overflow of the facilities located in the Canary Islands conceived for this purpose.
The Ministry of Defense transferred to the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration at the end of 2023 the facilities of the Arteaga General Headquarters, located in Carabanchel (Madrid), the Primo de Rivera Barracks (Alcalá de Henares), the Cartagena Naval Hospital and other land owned by them in Seville to house migrants arriving in the Canary Islands. In the case of the first two, it was necessary to carry out conditioning and rehabilitation works on the facilities.
For this, andThe department headed by Margarita Robles allocated 1,177,499.35 euros in 2023 and 878,027.48 euros in 2024 for the works in the General Arteaga Barracks and the Primo de Rivera Barracks, respectively.
In a written response to a question from Vox, collected by Europa Press, the Executive states that interior enclosure works were carried out in the barracks and, in the case of Primo de Rivera, the part of the base used by the Army of Land and the part in which the migrants are located.
The transfer of the four military installations made it possible to increase the capacity of the migrant reception system in more than 3,700 places. These people are free to enter, leave and live their lives, because the idea is not to imprison them. The Ministry of Defense always emphasized its concern to guarantee migrants conditions of dignity and humanity, which is why it was cooperative when giving up its facilities.
