The start of 2024 will be strange in terms of awards for American television. Strikes by writers and actors forced the delay of the 2023 Emmy ceremony, initially scheduled for September. Although their candidacies have been known since July, it will be on January 15 when their winners receive the statuettes. This has made the Golden Globes come ahead of the Television Academy Awards this year. And, in this way, The Bear (Disney+) and its two protagonists, Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri, have received awards this week for the second season of their series, while in eight days it is very likely that they will take the stand for recognition for their first batch of episodes . Because the Emmys will reward the series broadcast between June 2022 and May 2023 and the Golden Globes will reward those that have been seen in 2023.
This gibberish will not affect Succession. The HBO series reaches the awards (all of them) with its fourth and final season. She was the clear favorite to win the awards in the dramatic categories at the Golden Globes, awarded in the early hours of January 7 to 8. Applauded wildly by both the public and critics, the story of the Roys' business and family struggles accumulated up to three actors nominated in the drama protagonist category. Finally it was Kieran Culkin who prevailed, with his role as the Roys' foul-mouthed little brother, a character full of contradictions to which Culkin shined with his ability to express the enormous range of emotions he goes through. The prize was sung for the Australian Sarah Snook, Shiv in fiction, heartbreaking in some passages of the last batch of episodes. And there were no surprises in the supporting actor category (where all actors compete together: drama, comedy and miniseries), with Matthew Macfadyen very deservedly winning the award.
Historically, the Golden Globes have been awards that, in terms of television, have dared more to innovate than the conservative Emmys. If there could be any interest this year it was how the change in organizers (from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to Eldridge Industries) might affect the awards and their decisions. But precisely in the year of the end of Succession there was little room for change. Nor were any surprises expected in the comedy categories, where the highly applauded second season of The Bear has imposed its dominance over innovative proposals such as the combination of fiction and reality of The judge and retired veterans like Ted Lasso and Barry. Of course, it is still difficult to understand that a series about grief and anxiety, with disturbing chapters and characters on the brink of the abyss, is considered a comedy just because its chapters last about 30 minutes.
The miniseries category was perhaps the least clear of the night, but it finally emerged as the big winner Row (Netflix), a production that takes place at an accelerated pace and that transfers the stress of modern life and the competitiveness of capitalist society to a story on the verge of derangement in which a man and a woman are involved in an absurd fight for make each other's lives miserable after a silly car argument. Both the series and its two protagonists, Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, won awards in categories in which they also competed in the last season of Fargo, Fellow Travelers, Everyone Loves Daisy Jones and Cook with chemistry, among other.
Only Elizabeth Debicki, the one in charge of playing Diana of Wales in her last months of life in the final season of The Crown, managed to scratch a prize out of the three big winners of the night. She did it in a category that combined nominations for actresses from Succession, The Bear and even for Meryl Streep herself. The Crown It has always been one of the favorite awards titles. It remains to be seen what the Emmys will do next year with her, when she no longer has Succession as a rival.
