The Gears of War: E-Day trailer is not CG but in-game: the developers of the game and the people who worked on the presentation are keen to clarify this, especially in the face of incorrect descriptions that seem to want to diminish the value of what was shown during the Xbox Games Showcase.
The controversy was sparked by a post by Geoff Keighley, presenter of the opening event of the Summer Game Fest, who described the trailer as “a CG video made by Blur Studio using in-game assets from Unreal Engine 5″.
Jamir Blanco, cinematic artist at Blizzard, responded by trying to dot the i’s: “Let me rephrase that a little better: the amazing Gears of War: E-Day trailer you saw it ran in real time with models, textures and scenarios managed through Unreal Engine 5.”
“To say it was ‘a CG video made by Blur Studio’ means it belittle all the extraordinary technical achievements which you probably didn’t even notice, it was so beautiful. Although it looks like one of Blur’s many pre-rendered trailers, it is actually a real-time masterpiece that uses in-game assets and ray traced lights from the same graphics engine as the game.”
“I already see people saying ‘yeah, it was nice but it was a simple CG trailer‘ because of comments like this.”
Words are important
Although Blanco’s reaction was the harshest to Geoff Keighley’s post, other people have also tried to clarify the nature of the Gears of War: E-Day trailer in order to avoid spreading a wrong perception of what was shown at the Xbox Games Showcase.
Journalist Jez Corden, for example, wrote that many people are asking him if the trailer was pre-rendered due to Keighley’s tweet, but that from what he was told all textures, features, lights and physics they were in-engine, so much so users will be able to experience them in the game as soon as it is published.
Xbox marketing director Guy Welch tried to provide all the necessary clarifications, thanking Keighley for the kind words and explaining that the trailer was developed by Blur Studio in collaboration with The Coalition using Unreal Engine 5, with models, textures, scenarios and in-game objectswhich we will actually find in the game.
“It’s about the same approach used for the trailers of the first three chapters of Gears of Warwhich were built in Unreal Engine using in-game assets and showcasing the actual capabilities of the engine – a concept we are pushing even further with Unreal Engine 5.”
