The funeral of Pope Francis will be held on April 26 at 10 am in the Plaza de San Pedro del Vaticano.
The ceremony, which is expected to arrive heads of state from all over the world, will be officiated by the dean of the Cardenalicio College, Giovanni Battista Re. Once the ceremony is over, the coffin will be transferred to the Basilica of Santa María la Mayor to be buried, as the Pontiff written in his will.
Francisco, dead on April 21, 2025, will be the first Pope in a century that is not buried in the Grutas de San Pedro. “As I always promised the Virgin, and the place is already prepared, I want to be buried in Santa María la Mayor, because it is my great devotion,” said Francisco. “Before, when I came, I always went there on Sunday mornings, which was in Rome, I was there for a while. There is a very big bond.”
