The director of the San Sebastian Festival is ratified in the Donostia Award to Johnny Depp despite criticism from the women filmmakers: “It is our recognition of a great actor”
The awarding of the Donostia Award to Johnny Depp has not pleased the more than 700 professionals grouped in CIMA, the Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media, which yesterday issued a statement in which they regretted that the San Sebastian Festival awarded this year its honorary award to the actor, accused of abusing by his ex-wife Amber Heard, whom he divorced five years ago. The director of the contest José Luis Rebordinos does not want to get into controversy, but is ratified in the awarding of a prize that has gone to myths such as Bette Davis, Robert Mitchum or Al Pacino.
“The function of a film festival is not to judge the conduct of members of the film industry,” says Rebordinos. “The function of a film festival is to select the most relevant and interesting films of the year and to recognize those who have made an extraordinary contribution to the art of cinema. The Donostia Award to Johnny Depp is our recognition of a great actor, a film man with an important career, who visited us last year in his capacity as producer of the film ‘Crock of Gold. Drinking with Shane Macgowan ‘by Julien Temple, which won the Special Jury Prize.
CIMA recalls that Johnny Depp “is immersed in several judicial processes that have their origin in the accusations of mistreatment of his ex-wife Amber Heard.” “For a film festival as important as San Sebastián to stand on your side when justice has not yet done so,” the association considers, “is at least untimely and unjustifiable.” This year, the San Sebastián Festival will eliminate the Silver Shell for the best actor and best actress in their efforts to promote equality. The 69th edition of the Zinemaldia, which will be held from September 17 to 25, will end the gender distinction in the performance awards. “The change is due to the conviction that gender, a social and political construction, ceases for us to be a criterion of distinction in acting,” argues the director of the contest. The actors who participate in the films of the official section will have it more difficult from now on when the prizes go from four to two. There will only be one Silver Shell for the best lead performance and another for the best cast performance.
