Élisabeth Borne was elected deputy of the National Assembly for the sixth constituency of Calvados after defeating the candidate of the left-wing union (Nupes) in the second round
The prime minister, Élisabeth Borne, was elected deputy of the National Assembly for the sixth constituency of Calvados after defeating the candidate of the left-wing union (Nupes), Noé Gauchard, in the second round, by 52.46% of the votes. Borne will continue, therefore, at the head of the Government.
The Parisian, daughter of a pharmacist from Calvados, was appointed a month ago by Macron and was facing an electoral process for the first time. She passed the test. Borne is a technocrat, she had never exercised a local or political mandate. Her professional career has been developed in her integrity in the administration, in ministerial cabinets and in large public companies.
Along with her, fourteen other members of the Government presented themselves as candidates in their respective constituencies. All of them played their position at the polls. According to an unwritten rule, if a minister-candidate loses the elections he should resign, since he would not have the support of the polls.
This rule was imposed in 2007 by the conservative president Nicolas Sarkozy and has been applied ever since. In 2017, the four ministers and two Macron secretaries of state who presented themselves were elected deputies.
In addition to Borne, Gérald Darmanin (Minister of the Interior), Damien Abad (Solidarities) and Oliver Véran (Deputy Minister for Relations with Parliament) would win a seat, while waiting to know the names of all the members of the Government who will sit in the hemicycle.
Instead, Brigitte Bourguignon, Minister of Health, was defeated at the polls, as was the Secretary of State for the Sea, Justine Benin. Both will have to resign their positions.
At press time, the fate of Amélie de Montachalin (Ecological Transition), Stanislas Guerini (Public Administration) and Deputy Minister Clément Beaune (European Affairs), whose seats were on the line, was still unknown.
