Manuel Monsalvethe former Undersecretary of the Interior in the Chilean Government of Gabriel Boric, was arrested this Thursday accused of rape, in his home in the coastal city of Viña del Mar and amid great expectation. Agents from the Chilean Investigative Police (PDI) entered the house early in the morning and took the former undersecretary to a car heading to the courts in Santiago.
Monsalve, until a few weeks ago one of the most highly evaluated figures in the Government of President Gabriel Boric, He left his position on October 17after one of his advisors reported him for sexual assault.
The facts, according to the victim, They occurred last September 22 in the restaurant of a hotel in the center of Santiago, where Monsalve and a former advisor had dinner together. The former undersecretary, who was without escort that day, despite being in charge of the fight against organized crime in the country, is also being investigated for an alleged violation of the Intelligence Law. According to legal sources, Monsalve ordered PDI agents to review the hotel’s security cameras days before the complaint was filed.
“The most important thing in a situation of this nature, which is of extraordinary complexity and seriousnessis knowing the truth. What I have said from the beginning is that the complaints have to be investigated, regardless of who they affect“said Monsalve on November 1 in his first statements to the press after the outbreak of the case.
The complaint caused a political earthquake in the Government and both Boric and his Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, received countless criticism for the management of an issue so extremely sensitive for the left how is that of sexist violence and for not having fired Monsalve as soon as he found out of the facts and having waited two days.
The arrest takes place hours after the complainant’s father expressed his concern in an exclusive interview on the CHV Noticias channel about the delay in the formal accusation of the former undersecretary. “I trust prosecutor Armendáriz and the people from the Prosecutor’s Office who have given us support. But I do have some fears… We are facing a very powerful person,” he stated.
