Mariano Carles Egea, who was president of the Cartagena Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Navigation in the 1970s and later head of the Port Works Board, the current Port Authority of Cartagena, died Monday at the age of 93 in his domicile of Murcia.
Carles Egea was well known in Cartagena for his time as a business leader, but above all because for more than thirty years he ran a women’s and men’s fashion store on Calle Mayor. He presided over the Chamber from May 1970 to December 1979, precisely in the decade in which the Valle de Escombreras began to be populated with companies. He replaced Bernardo García-Pagán Hernández (1968-1970) and was succeeded by Damián Romero López (1979-1986).
A few months later he entered to preside over the Port until 1983, when he ceased in office. Later, he entered as head of the Cajamurcia area, where he is well remembered by workers of that time, and friends.
When he retired from this financial entity, he set up a bank assistance office for processing mortgage loans, already in Murcia.
Funeral in Murcia
His body was transferred to the Arco Íris Funeral Home in Murcia, where the funeral mass takes place this Tuesday at 11 am, family sources reported.
