Surprise and shock in Yecla, which has woken up with the news of the death of Domingo Carpena, who was mayor of Yecla, regional deputy for the PSOE and historical leader in the city of this formation.
Carpena passed away this past morning at his second home in Alicante suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 68. His mortal remains will be transferred this morning to the Virgen del Castillo funeral home and tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. his funeral is scheduled to take place in the Purisima basilica.
Domingo Carpena Sánchez was born on October 8, 1953 in Yecla. His love for medicine marked him a lot in his life and led him to practice as a family doctor at the Mariano Yago Health Center, where he became director.
In 1980 he joined the Socialist Party. Politics was, after medicine, his great passion. He was a member of the PSOE in 1984, Secretary of Organization from 1986 to 1987, local Secretary General in 2000 and a member of the regional committee.
Among the public positions he held, Carpena was mayor of Yecla from November 26, 1988 to June 15, 1991.
During his tenure, which lasted about three years, he inaugurated the indoor swimming pool, the La Pedrera school, the teachers’ center, the fire station and completed the remodeling of the bullring and the Concha Segura Theatre.
In addition, he was a councilor of the Yecla City Council from 1983 to 2007 when he left local politics on the front line.
In 2003 he was elected regional deputy for four years, the last of his public posts.
Over recent years, although he did not hold any position in active politics, his participation “in the shadows” within the Socialist Party of Yecla was known to all.
His last appearance starring in a public act was in December 2019 when he delivered the speech in tribute to the Constitution.
condolences
The mayor of Yecla, Remedios Lajara, expressed her condolences for the loss of “an affable and loyal man to the institution of the city council.”
Lajara has decreed a day of official mourning in Yecla and the flags will fly halfway up. The events scheduled for today on the occasion of the Yecla September Fair are not suspended.
From the Socialist Party of Yecla, its Secretary General, Cristóbal Ruiz has publicly offered condolences to Carpena’s family. “Today we had agreed to go to football together to see Yeclano and talk about politics, the game and the future.”
Ruiz assures that he has been “a strong blow” by the news and thanks on behalf of the socialist group “all the dedication he has had for the party and for Yecla society.”
