The world of sport in mourning for the sudden death of Mario De Marchi, former Belgian sprinter but of origins and resident in Italy
Yet another road crash in Italy, which unfortunately had a very sad outcome in terms of people who lost their lives and injured. The only one to lose his life was Mario De Marchi, 73, very famous for being a champion in athletics in his youth. The conditions of his wife and of another woman who were traveling in another car involved in his accident were very serious.
The road accidenta terrible frontal crash between two cars, took place near Pordenone, in one of the arteries leading to the city from the southern part of the city, coming from Oderzo.
For reasons still under investigation and currently being examined by the investigators, the car in which the former champion and his wife were traveling and another coming in the opposite direction, collide head-on and at a fairly high speed.
A third car that was coming just at that moment, to avoid the two vehicles involved in the frontal, ended up ruinously in a moat that runs along the road.
Timely the arrival of the rescuers at the crash site, which found a devastating scene before their eyes. The two cars were reduced to a pile of metal sheets and to extract the passengers, the Fire Brigade had to work for a long time.
For Mario De Marchi there was no nothing to do, if not declare his death. Her wife, a 61-year-old woman who was traveling with him, was resuscitated on the spot after she suffered a cardiac arrest. Currently sta struggling to survivein very serious condition, hospitalized in Pordenone hospital.
The conditions of the car are also very delicate 50 year old woman traveling in the other car. Transported by helicopter rescue to the Udine hospital, she too is struggling to survive.
Who was Mario De Marchi
Born in Belgium in 1949, Mario De Marchi had Italian origins and has always maintained a very special relationship with Italy. As evidence of this, his transfer to Pordenone about 10 years ago.
Considered one of the most important and winning athletes and sprinters in the history of Belgium, he was national champion of the 100 meters in 1972 and of the 400 meters in 1976. In the 4 x 100 relay, he is still the national record holder today.
He has also competed on several occasions with Pietro Mennea and for a simple case, he did not participate in the Montreal Olympics in 1976as the Federation chose to add the field hockey team rather than the relay team.
