The anti-Russian sanctions of the European Union (EU) and the United States in the aviation industry are an unprecedented attempt to influence Moscow’s foreign policy decisions. This was announced on Wednesday, March 9, by Dmitry Birichevsky, Director of the Department for Economic Cooperation of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“We regard the decisions of the US and EU authorities as an unprecedented attempt to influence the foreign policy decisions made by the Russian Federation, focused on ensuring legitimate interests in the field of national security,” he said in an interview. “RIA News”.
Birichevsky noted that these restrictions are aimed against a huge civilian industry and jeopardize the safety of passenger air travel on both domestic and international routes.
According to him, Moscow regrets that the EU unleashed an economic war against Russia.
“Unfortunately, the European Union unleashed a “total economic war” against Russia. Since the end of February, four packages of new economic and sectoral sanctions have been gradually introduced against our country,” Birichevsky concluded.
On March 4, the Federal Air Transport Agency demanded that Russian airlines urgently re-register aircraft in the national register and apply for Russian airworthiness certificates. Today, most of the aircraft fleet of Russian carriers is not registered in Russia, but in Bermuda (UK) and Ireland.
At the end of February, planes began to be taken away from Russian airlines due to EU sanctions. Thus, Anna Podgornaya, CEO of Pegas Touristik, a tour operator affiliated with the carrier, spoke about the cancellation of the insurance of the Nordwind Airlines Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.
On March 2, Airbus suspended the provision of services to support Russian airlines and stopped supplying spare parts to Russia due to Western sanctions. Boeing made a similar move the day before.
Western countries imposed sanctions after Russia launched an operation to protect civilians in the Donbass on February 24. The situation in the region escalated significantly in mid-February due to shelling by the Ukrainian military. The authorities of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics announced the evacuation of residents to the Russian Federation, and also turned to Moscow for help. On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree recognizing the independence of the DPR and LPR and promised to support the republics.
