The Ford Capri was introduced in 1969 as a kind of Mustang for the European car buyer. It was an affordable four-seat coupe built on the Ford Taunus chassis. The car was a great success for Ford and remained in production until 1986.
Now Ford has revived the Capri name, but not for a sleek four-seat coupe like in the 1970s. On the contrary, almost, because the new Capri will be an electric SUV. That may not go down well with fans of the old Capri, but Ford has previously pulled the same trick with the electric Mustang Mach-E. That is an electric SUV that also has nothing to do with the Ford Mustang of yesteryear.
Electric SUV
Yet this time Ford goes very far in diluting its model names from the past, because the new Capri is not even a Ford. According to the British Coach the new Capri is to become the sporty sister of the recently presented European Ford Explorer. And that is another Volkswagen ID.4 with a new look. The car once originated from a short-lived collaboration between the two brands.
45,000 euros
The new Capri will have a 300 hp electric motor, rear-wheel drive and will have a range of about 500 kilometers and will cost about 45,000 euros. The car sprints from 0-100 km / h in 6.4 seconds and is said to get something from the old Capri, namely double headlights, just like the third generation of the ‘old’ Capri. According to Ford, the buying public loves seeing classic names reused in new segments. Opel has previously taken the name Manta out of mothballs for an electric crossover.
The original Ford Capri was based on the Cortina and would first be called the Colt. Since Mitsubishi already had the rights to that name, the name was changed to Capri. Nearly two million copies of this model were built. The affordable sports coupe was available with powertrains that varied from a simple 1.3 four-cylinder to thick V6 engines. From a sporting point of view, the Capri was also a success. The car won many rallies and races, including the Nürburgring 24 hour race.
