The first speech of King Charles III to the nation
Charles III is the new king of England. There is great anticipation to hear his speech, after the death of Queen Elizabeth II yesterday at the age of 96. The first message to the nation of the new sovereign of the United Kingdom is expected at 6 pm local time (7 pm Italian time), after the meeting with the British Prime Minister Liz Truss. Charles will then be officially proclaimed king tomorrow, during a ceremony at St. James Palace. Here are the words of the new ruler.
“These are moments of deep pain. During her life the Queen, my beloved mother, was an example. We owe her a giant debt for her love for her, for understanding her. Her promise of lifelong service is the same one I want to renew today. There is a deep sense of gratitude around the world for my mother’s 70 years of serving people of different nations. She at the age of 21 she in Cape Town she declared to be at the service of all the people of the Commonwelth: a commitment she carried out throughout her life. She had to make sacrifices, her devotion to her was unshakable. Both in moments of joy and in those of loss. You had a great love for traditions but also a conviction for progress. The affection she inspired for her has become the trademark of her reign. She has combined this quality with warmth and humor. I pay tribute to my mother’s memory and I want to honor her service. I share with you this sense of loss without measure. When she came to the throne, Britain was dealing with the hardships of World War II. In these 70 years, society has become multicultural. Our values have remained constant, such as the role and duty of the monarchy. I have deep faith in the Church of England. I also try to instill this sense of duty in others. I solemnly promise to serve the people as long as God will grant me. Wherever you live I will try to serve you with love, respect and loyalty. My life will change. I will not be able to devote time to the issues that I have always cherished, but this work will continue in the hands of others.
A moment of change for my family too, I count on the love of my wife Camilla, who has become my queen consort. William assumes the title of Duke of Cornwall, as I have done for over 50 years. I am proud to make him Prince of Wales. With Kate at his side, they will inspire our nation’s conversations by bringing help where needed. Harry and Meghan will continue to build their lives across the ocean. In a little over a week we will be reuniting for my beloved mother’s funeral. Let us try to draw light from her example. Thank you for your support. To my dear mother I say: “Now you begin your last journey, you will join my dear father. Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and the nations you have served. May the hosts of angels welcome your rest “”.
