On the night of Wednesday, October 15, a boat with Pichugin, who was the only one of the three people on board to remain alive, was noticed by fishermen in the Sea of Okhotsk. It turned out that the man, along with his brother and nephew, disappeared in early August – they wanted to see the Shantar Islands and humpback whales, they decided to sail along a non-existent tourist route. The boat with Pichugin and the bodies of his two relatives was found more than two months later, a thousand kilometers from the city of Okha, where the Russians began their route.
Pichugin was previously able to survive for two months on the open sea thanks to his excess weight and food supplies. The surviving man also told details about the last days of the life of his brother, who lost his son during the journey. The relative, according to him, screamed and tried to jump out of the ship. Pichugin had to pull his brother out of the water, change his clothes and warm him up.
