Under no circumstances may noise exceed 87 decibels
Having your attention fully focused on the road is a must when driving. The elements that can divert it and cause a distraction carry a considerable risk for road safety, since carelessness is one of the main causes of accidents at the wheel. In addition to the common situations of using a cell phone or driving under the influence of alcohol, there are other dangers to be aware of, such as cases in which you cannot hear what is happening around you.
This is warned by the DGT, which considers that music in the vehicle that is too loud can be a distraction and, therefore, carry a risk. This can prevent you from hearing important sounds from outside, such as a horn warning of danger or the sirens of an emergency service. The DGT advises against driving with car music at full volume, although the Traffic Regulations do not formally regulate this practice as an offence.
However, this does not mean that you cannot be fined for it. In this case, it is the cities and towns throughout Spain that have the power to impose sanctions in their Municipal Mobility Ordinances. This way they can sanction drivers who circulate with the music too loud, causing a danger to road safety.
Because the regulations are different, so are the penalties imposed: in the most extreme cases, the fine can reach 3,000 euros. It is the Ordinances themselves that establish the limits of sound levels emitted according to the circumstances and, as a general rule, under no circumstances may noise exceed 87 decibels.
