There research against the baldness has taken a step forward with the discovery of a possible natural remedy: deoxyribose, a sugar present in the human body. Researchers atUniversity of Sheffieldin collaboration with Comsats University Islamabad, conducted a study on mice that showed how this molecule can stimulate hair follicles and promote hair regrowth.
A natural aid for hair regrowth and against baldness
The discovery stems from eight years of research aimed at understanding how deoxyribose could accelerate wound healing. During the experiments, the researchers noticed that hair near the treated wounds grew faster. To further investigate this observation, they recreated a model of androgenetic alopecia in mice, the most common form of baldness that affects many men and some women.
The results were surprising: the application of a small dose of deoxyribose promoted the formation of new blood vessels, essential for nourishing hair follicles and stimulating regrowth. This sugar has proven to be as effective as Minoxidilone of the few drugs approved for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia.
“The research is still in its early stages, but the results are promising and warrant further investigation,” says Sheila MacNeil, emeritus professor of tissue engineering at the University of Sheffield. “This could offer a new approach to treating a condition that can profoundly affect people’s self-image and confidence.”
The deoxyribose molecule is easy to obtain, inexpensive, and stable. It could be administered in various formulations, including gels for topical treatment, thus making the treatment accessible to many.
