No, this is not a Ferrari 250 GT SWB. Unfortunately. The good news is, it’s not a computer render either. This is the first real RML Short Wheelbase. And these are real photos. Officially, British RML calls it a tribute to the Ferrari 250 GT ‘Short Wheelbase’, which is arguably the most beautiful Ferrari of all time.
The beauty makes it all the more painful to realize that this car is about to go through hell, or as company RML puts it diplomatically: ‘an intensive sustainability program at the UTAC test facility in Bedfordshire’. One small consolation is that it is still a pre-production model.
The photos you see here were taken before the car started its journey to Mount Doom. If you need a summary, we’ve got one: RML plans to build thirty of these things, each powered by a 5.5-litre V12 from a Ferrari 550 Maranello, which in turn is mated to a six-speed manual transmission.
Specifications RML Short Wheelbase
It weighs 1,470 kilograms and RML estimates that the 0-100 sprint takes about 4.1 seconds. The power is 485 hp and 658 Nm. That is faster than the 550 Maranello. “The RML Short Wheelbase was never designed to compete with the acceleration or top speed of a typical supercar,” said RML chief Michael Mallock at the car’s unveiling last year.
“Our emphasis has always been on providing a more organic driving experience with less intervention and more usable performance,” he added. The body is of course made of carbon fiber and the car has many modern tricks, such as electrically adjustable seats.
