Senator Klimov said that the moratorium on the death penalty is the sovereign right of Russia
The moratorium on the death penalty in Russia is a sovereign right of the country and does not depend on its participation in international organizations. Such conditions were clarified by the head of the commission of the Federation Council for the protection of state sovereignty Andrey Klimov, writes RIA News.
According to the senator, the moratorium is a sovereign decision of Russia, therefore only the state can “change it in any direction.”
Earlier, Andrei Klishas, Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation, said that the moratorium on the death penalty in Russia is indefinite and is not related to membership in the Council of Europe.
In addition, he assured that the withdrawal from the Council of Europe will not affect the citizens of Russia. After the country’s withdrawal from the international organization, the senator called on residents to more actively apply to domestic courts, including the Constitutional Court.
On February 25, the Council of Europe temporarily suspended Russia’s membership after the start of a special operation in Ukraine. According to Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, this is a necessary measure in connection with the operation.
