The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced this Tuesday the renewal of coach Luis de la Fuente and his coaching staff until the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The coach, who finished his contract on June 30 of this year , will continue in office after the federative body, as promoted by President Pedro Rocha, decided to apply the automatic and unilateral renewal clause of his contract, even though Spain is now participating in the Euro Cup in Germany. Along with De la Fuente, his staff will continue: Pablo Amo (second coach), Miguel Ángel España (goalkeeping coach), Carlos Cruz (physical trainer), Juanjo González and Pablo Peña (analysts), as well as Javier López Vallejo (psychologist ).
“Luis de la Fuente took charge of the national team in December 2022 and led Spain to win the UEFA Nations League in 2023, a highly celebrated title after more than a decade without success. In addition, he brilliantly qualified the team for this summer’s Euro Cup, a tournament that the National Team has already been preparing since last Saturday in Las Rozas,” the federation stated in an official statement, which recalled that the extension of the contract means making the agreement reached in February with the coach. “It is something that we already knew would happen,” De la Fuente resolved as his first words in the press conference prior to the friendly match against Andorra in Badajoz; “This Wednesday we started to compete and play games, and it was an opportune time to strengthen our position. “I face it with the same responsibility as the first day.”
That responsibility stops now for Andorra and on Saturday, already in Mallorca, against the Northern Ireland team, the last stop before the Euro Cup – “Some have played more than 60 demanding games. “We need matches that would help us activate our competitive level,” he agreed to explain the low difficulty of the rivals, where Croatia, Italy and Albania will be measured in the group stage. It is also the opportunity for the footballers to ask for a place on the team, since there are 29 players and only 26 fit on the final list. “The day I gave the list I was clear about who the 26 players on the final list were going to be. . But they don’t know it and that means there is a lot of competition. “Everyone is having a very professional attitude,” the coach resolved, without considering the current training sessions but rather what was done during the course. But he added: “The atmosphere is exceptional. New ones integrate quickly. I see excitement and competitiveness. There is no nervousness or tension whatsoever. Whoever leaves will be happy because those who stay here are his friends.”
Infected with optimism and the atmosphere, the coach had compliments for everyone. “Pedri is back. We have seen him with enthusiasm and energy…, but he doesn’t have to prove anything to me. I know him perfectly. The only thing he has to do is arrive safely on the 15th or 20th,” he said. “Jesús Navas is a sure value. He will be 35 years old, but in the DNI. In the rest he is a youth. And he continues with that humility of being better every day,” he defended. “That Fermín was in the call was a surprise for you, not for me. We’ll see how he goes throughout the week. Fermín is a great footballer because he has a capacity for growth that the entire coaching staff likes,” he said. “Morata is unquestionable. He gives us all the guarantees. Zero doubts. The streaks begin and end no one knows when. What we do know is that he is going to score a lot of goals,” he concluded. Satisfaction and renewal with the Euro Cup just around the corner.
