The invitation to Galeazzo Bignami, deputy of the Brothers of Italy, who went to the headlines of the city news for his photo in Nazi uniform that circulated in 2016, and Igor Iezzi the Northern League deputy near the far right, on the stage of the Feast of the Unity of the Democratic Party which begins today, Thursday 26 August.
Bignami and Iezzi should have been present on 9 September at 6.15 pm, in the Nilde Iotti Room, at the debate “Healing and strengthening democracy, possible reforms”: with them there will be – among many others – the Minister for Relations with Parliament Federico D ‘Incà, and the former ministers Maria Elena Boschi and Gaetano Quagliariello.
Bignami, Giorgia Meloni’s strongman in Bologna, a past in Forza Italia, had made headlines in 2016 for a photo that portrayed him dressed as a Nazi. The image was from a few years earlier, he justified himself by saying: “It was a bachelor party, a joke among friends”. In 2019, when he passed from Berlusconi to Meloni, his “tour” among the public housing was reported to the privacy guarantor to declaim the names of all foreign residents who had accommodation. A few months earlier, he was at the side of Gianfranco Stella at the presentation of the book “Compagno mitra, historical essay on partisan atrocities”.
The Anpi, which has its stand at the party exactly in front of the central stage, did not hesitate to speak of an “affront” after years of battles on the front of historical revisionism. “We know his thinking and his methods – says the president of the local Anpi, Anna Cocchi – we cannot approve them, as well as his choice of clothes. Different ideas are respectable, behaviors are not ”. The discontent yesterday spilled on social networks, provoked declarations and distances even in the party, it reached the Nazarene. “Galeazzo Bignami is not welcome at the Festa dell’Unità. We believe in open confrontation, and institutional reforms are discussed with all political forces. But among our community those who praise Nazism cannot be welcomed ”.
In an article in the newspaper Repubblica it is said that the secretary dem Enrico Letta would have withdrawn the invitation for Bignami. And on the Resto del Carlino a note from the Democratic Party appeared in which the cancellation of the invitation for Bignami was made official: “Galeazzo Bignami is not welcome at the Festa dell’Unità. We believe in open and free dialogue with everyone. And institutional reforms are discussed with all political forces. But among our community those who praise Nazism cannot be welcomed ”.
The decision of the Nazarene arrived late last night, after the many controversies on the left. From Dora Palumbo of United Left e Maurizio Acerbo of the Communist Refoundation, a Marta Collot of Power to the People, including internal criticism of the Democratic Party, with the dem Davide Di Noi who called the invitation to the FdI deputy “an error”.
The perplexity remains for the choice to invite guests whose past is very distant from the line of a party, the Democratic Party, which in these days is carrying on its battle for the removal from the government of Claudio Durigon, the Northern League undersecretary who wants to change the name of the Falcone and Borsellino park in Mussolini park.
