He punched Andrés Cortabitarte in the back and was identified by the National Police, who had to assist the former Adif security chief due to a slight dizziness
Adif’s former head of security, Andrés Cortabitarte, was attacked at the exit of the first session of the trial for the Alvia train accident, which is being held in Santiago de Compostela. Cortabitarte, one of the two accused in the procedure, was attacked from behind by the father of one of the 80 deceased in the incident, who was identified by the National Police.
The incident took place after the defendant left the building where the trial is being held. He did it guarded by a good number of riot police officers and his lawyers. Cortabitarte found himself face to face with a small group of relatives who followed him and rebuked: “You have 80 dead behind your back, you have no shame”, “you killed my daughter”, “bastard, scoundrel”, “there you are, 27 years old , his death will carry on your back forever, no matter what the sentence says”.
At one point, between the commotion of cameras and serious insults, a man came running from behind and punched him in the back. Cortabitarte stopped, dislocated and suffered a slight dizziness. After that, the police officers who were guarding him and his lawyers supported him against a van to check his condition, while he continued to receive insults from those present.

Subsequently, the former security manager of the railway manager got into a car to leave the City of Culture, where the macro-trial is being held, while the agents retained and identified the man who had punched him.
Before the attack, Cortabitarte warned journalists that he was not going to comment on the trial with a single but forceful statement: “In 10 years I have not spoken and I will never speak,” he advanced.
Sources from the Superior Court of Justice of Galicia indicated that the indication was that there was only one access to the courtroom, the main door through which the driver arrived and left, but in no case was the back door enabled for it. The defendant entered that place in the morning, a circumstance that generated discomfort among the victims.
Given this incident, the National Police evaluates whether it is necessary to take reinforcement measures in the judicial headquarters and assesses enabling another entrance for the parties in person and keeping the attending public away.
