‘Inventing Anna’, the most recent series in the universe of Shonda Rhimes, the creator of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘How to Get Away with Murder’, was released in early February 2022 on Netflix. It follows the story of a young woman who swindled some of New York’s richest people out of thousands of dollars.
When the series ends, it is unclear whether ‘Anna’, played by Julia Garner, once believed the lies he told to get closer to his next victims. Or yes, he was always aware that what he was creating was a fantasy.
Just like this character, inspired by the real life case of Anna Sorokin, there are thousands of people who seem to create public figures exclusively to hurt others or dare to say controversial ideas.

The crimes committed by the televangelist Adnan Oktar are much more complex than scams for large sums of money. In January 2021, this famous Turkish Islamist He was sentenced to 1,075 years in prison for the crimes of sexual abuse, sexual abuse of minors, fraud, and attempted political and military espionage.
Religious and sexual worship
Adnan Oktar was a TV preacher on ‘A9’ channel on Turkish TV, where he shared sermons on the right Muslim path.
However, while he was talking about religion, All around her were women dressed in bathing suits or generally revealing clothing.
These women, who also had to be part of the cult founded by Oktar, were called by him as ‘my kittens’.
Among the ideas he preached were certain speeches denying the Jewish Holocaust and Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. For this reason, he was close to far-right Christian groups in the United States who, like him, praise Creationism as the true origin of the world.

Also, upon entering the cult women were required to marry Oktar. This did not mean that these women would have sexual relations exclusively with him, but rather that, according to the accounts of some people who left the sect, they could be turned into “motor women”. Namely, women for the sexual pleasure of multiple men.
For the media outlet ‘Middle East Eye’ (‘The Eye of the Middle East’), Ebru Simsek, a former member of the sect, recounted how she lived trying to get out of it.

“One day he approached me and offered me to live with him in his mansion.”, remembers Simsek, who appeared in a beauty pageant on Turkish television in 1994. Oktar promised her all kinds of luxuries to convince her to go with him.
“I found out that he filed more than 300 defamation lawsuits against me,” Simsek explained for ‘The Eye of the Middle East’.
Adnan Oktar wrote a book, under the pseudonym Harun Yahya, called ‘The Atlas of Creation’, in which he said he had collected evidence in more than 800 pages that contradicted Charles Darwin and all the evidence for the evolution of species.
Needless to say, said volume has been reviewed by scientists and it does not pass the most basic principles of scientific research.
“Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin and many other famous terrorists all clearly say that they have been under the influence of Darwin,” Oktar said in an interview for ‘BBC Mundo’ in 2010, in which he related European 20th-century fascism to the Theory of Evolution, even if Darwin’s ideas precisely defended genetic diversity over maintaining a ‘pure race’.

Despite his anti-Semitic and Holocaust denier comments, he has been seen in meetings with right-wing groups in Israel, which advocate the violent occupation of Palestine. He even had meetings with former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. However, there is no evidence that Oktar has links to the Jewish community in Turkey, instead, it speaks exclusively of interreligious cooperation with Jews in Israel.
This last encounter with the Turkish justice has been only the most recent, since in the past he has already been both in prisons and in psychiatric clinics. Oktar has stated that all research against him has come from the “Deep State” of the United Kingdom, and that they are evolutionist terrorists.
Adnan Oktar, along with 13 other members of his organization, were arrested for attempted espionage, sexual abuse and abuse of minors, in investigations that spill over into Turkish politicians as well. He was sentenced to 1075 years in prison. Tarkan Yavas and Oktar Babuna, managers of his organization, were sentenced to 211 and 186 years, respectively.
