The president of the Community, Fernando López Miras, could not maintain for another day the power vacuum generated in the Ministry of Health after the resignation of Manuel Villegas, who on Wednesday submitted his resignation after publishing THE TRUTH that he was vaccinated against Covid after skipping the Ministry’s protocol, like the rest of the senior officials in his department and the SMS. Aware of the urgent need to find a replacement at a time as complicated as the current one, the head of the autonomous Executive chose to relieve Villegas, after shuffling several candidates, at doctor Juan José Pedreño, whose appointment was published this Friday night in the Official Gazette of the Region (BORM). Its designation perfectly matches the profile Miras was looking for: a seasoned medical professional, respected and knowledgeable of the regional health reality.
He will attend his first Covid Committee today, but he will do so telematically when he is in quarantine with coronavirus
Pedreño, whose specialty is family doctor and who currently works in the health center of San Andrés (Murcia), has extensive experience in management and Primary Care. He has also been manager of Health Area III, that of Lorca, between 2014 and 2016, and has also held the position of medical deputy director of Primary Care at the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital and medical director of said Area III. Pedreño participated in the Plan of Attention to Women (PIAM) for the entire Region and in Lorca had to face, together with Catalina Lorenzo, then managing director of Rafael Méndez and later counselor with Alberto Garre, the consequences of earthquakes and hospital rehabilitation, strongly deteriorated by the earthquake.
The new tenant of the Ronda de Levante headquarters lands in the regional government in the toughest episode of the pandemic and with the challenge of bending the contagion curve and managing the serious healthcare saturation unleashed during the third wave, with hospitals at the limit of their capacity, ICUs above 100% and health centers in the red level due to the workload.
During his time at the Rafael Méndez de Lorca, he faced the consequences of the earthquakes and the rehabilitation of the hospital
Although from his position in San Andrés he already knows first-hand the problems derived from the flood of infected patients, this Saturday the new Minister of Health will have his first contact with the team of senior positions and technicians led so far by Manuel Villegas. This Saturday morning he will attend, telematically from his home, where he is in quarantine after testing positive for the coronavirus, to its first Covid Community Monitoring Committee, which was convened this Friday urgently to address the difficult situation that the Region is going through and, possibly, to adopt new measures to tighten restrictions.
Juan José Pedreño thus leads a team designed entirely by his predecessor and which is supported by two main pillars: the manager of the Murcian Health Service, Asensio López, and the general director of Public Health and Addictions, José Carlos Vicente, who will continue in their posts at least until the pandemic subsides.
