Almost twenty days after the devastating passage of DANA through the province of Valencia, stories of dozens of people who survived the floods on the afternoon of October 29 are still emerging. This is the case of Aurora, a baby from Paiporta barely a month old who She spent the night of the storm wrapped in a suitcase thanks to Azahara, a neighbor who did not hesitate to help the little girl, her mother -Flor- and her grandmother, when they were trying to escape the floods.
Azahara saw from a wall that the two women had gotten out of the car in which they were traveling with the baby in their arms to try to escape the flood. Thus, he decided to get off the wall he was on and climb onto the fence of a nearby industrial warehouse, and from there he tried to help them climb onto them as well. “When she saw that she was high, (Flor) gave me the girl and, as best we could, We enter the premises and go up to the second floor“, explained the neighbor in statements to RTVE.
The four of them were on this second floor for hours in the dark, watching how the water level was rising little by little. Therefore, they decided to break a window to escape if the water rose and grabbed several elements that could float, “pallets”, “two wheels” and even “a dislocated door.” “For the baby, We packed the suitcase with a change of clothes and things to keep it warm. and that’s it,” details Azahara
He didn’t cry “at any time”
Also, remember that Aurora did not cry “at any time.” He was in there for hours, “about three or five,” while his mother, his grandmother and Azahara tried to “overcome the panic” and make “survival decisions.” “Rather than dying by drowning, you don’t think about it,” the paiportina assures the aforementioned media.
When the water level began to drop, they heard several Civil Guard agents approaching their improvised shelter. Azahara clearly remembers the moment in which they were rescued: “I have recorded the image of when we left: one of the agents He hugged the creature and passed it to another through the fence. until he reached the sergeant and took her, kissed her on the forehead and we all began to leave the ship.
“It was the most comforting thing of the night for those of us who were there,” says First Sergeant Jesús del Río, from the main post in Paiporta, in statements reported by the aforementioned media. He was the last to hold Aurora, and remembers that the moment of her rescue gave them “some light” on that “so fucked up” night.
