The removal of the train that remains derailed between the Atocha and Chamartín stations will have “quite an impact” on rail transport, since it will force “cut off all circulation” from this last station “towards Levante”, as reported by the general secretary of the Union of Railway Machinists, Diego Martín.
“They are going to have to make an alternative transportation plan leaving from Atocha station,” Martín explained this Saturday morning in an interview on TVE. Therefore, “preliminary” preparations are now being made, due to its “complexity”.
Last weekend, a train with two operators on board that was being towed detached itself from another and continued on its way without a driver or brakes for four kilometers. The decision of an Adif employee to derail it prevented a possible collision of this device, which still remains in the tunnel, with another convoy.
«It is normal that all these operations are done at night, although due to the complexity will probably spreadthat’s why they will have to cut off traffic,” ventured the general secretary of the Machinists’ Union.
Furthermore, he has indicated that the impact that occurs will be determined by the speed with which this withdrawal can occur, although that cannot be calculated “until the same moment” in which the operation is performed. Likewise, he pointed out, “unforeseen events” may arise due to the state in which the rolling stock may be.
Regarding the causes of the incident, Martín has stated that the union “fully” trusts the investigation commission that has to make the assessment and has highlighted that Hypothesizing is “reckless”. The objective, in his opinion, should be to know everything that happened and thus prevent it from happening again.
