Magnetic storms expected after powerful solar flares
After powerful flares on the Sun, magnetic storms are expected to reach the Earth by midday on Saturday, October 5, and last until the night of Tuesday, October 8. The leading expert of the Phobos weather center, Mikhail Leus, warned about the consequences in his Telegram-channel.
Two powerful solar flares of maximum class X–X7.1 and X9 occurred on October 2 and 3. They took third and first place, respectively, in the list of the most powerful flares of solar cycle 25.
It was assumed that solar flares would cause magnetic storms on Earth earlier, but this did not happen. As Leus explained, the first cloud of ejected “solar matter” slightly “grazed” the planet.
At the same time, consequences on Earth are expected as a result of the influence of the second cloud. According to the forecast, magnetic storms will begin to be felt after noon on October 5 – first there will be weak magnetospheric disturbances, and then they will grow to the level of weak magnetic storms, and then gradually intensify, reaching a maximum (class G3, the third level out of five possible) on October 6.
“After which the space storm will subside, and magnetic storms, already of medium and weak level, class G2-G1, with interruptions, will last until the night of October 8,” Leus predicted.
Earlier, the chief specialist of the Moscow weather bureau, Tatyana Pozdnyakova, said that the magnetic storm will not affect the weather in Moscow in any way. The weather forecaster called the cooling in the region normal for October.
