The low rates of vaccination against coronavirus infection, as well as the high level of spread of the Delta strain in Russia, have led to the fact that herd immunity has not yet developed in Russians. This was announced on October 26 by Ancha Baranova, professor at the School of Systems Biology at George Mason University (USA), Chief Researcher at the Laboratory of Functional Genomics at the Medical Genomics Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
“We all hoped for him very much. We thought there would be vaccination and immunity. But the rate of vaccination in Russia is low. In addition, the Delta strain began to spread, which reduced the effectiveness of the vaccine, ”she said in an interview with“RIA News”…
The expert explained that for those who had been ill and vaccinated, it was already the turn to be revaccinated. The rate of revaccination, however, is worse than the rates of the initial vaccination, she explained.
Baranova added that the formation of herd immunity in the country depends on the behavior of Russians, as well as on mutations of the coronavirus.
October 21, a virologist at the N.F. Gamalei, Professor Alexander Butenko said that the emergence of new strains of coronavirus is inevitable. According to him, new genotypes can evolve both towards an increase in pathogenic and virulent properties, and towards their decrease. As the expert summed up, among the population of countries with high rates of vaccination, the situation with coronavirus is improving significantly.
Epidemiologist Eduard Shunkov noted on October 18 that the rate of immunization of the population against coronavirus is insufficient to successfully fight the spread of the infection.
On October 16, the level of herd immunity to COVID-19 in Russia was estimated at 45%. Vaccination with the first component was carried out 51 million times, full-cycle vaccination – 47.5 million times.
A large-scale vaccination has been taking place in Russia since January. Citizens are vaccinated free of charge and voluntarily. Five vaccines against coronavirus have been registered in the country: Sputnik V, which became the first vaccine against COVID-19 in the Russian Federation and the world, as well as Sputnik Light, EpiVacCorona, EpiVacCorona-N and KoviVak.
