Ukraine lost 2% of GDP due to the severance of economic ties with Russia. Such calculations were announced on Monday, July 12, by the Ukrainian economic expert Oleksandr Okhrimenko.
“If we take foreign trade and calculate how much Ukraine has not received in addition, starting from 2014, then about $ 50 billion comes out due to the severance of trade ties with the Russian Federation,” he said in an interview with “RIA News“.
Okhrimenko noted that after the election of Vladimir Zelensky as head of state, there was hope for the restoration of economic ties between the countries. However, he pointed out, after three years of the presidency, nothing has changed.
In this regard, the expert came to the conclusion that as long as there is no pragmatic president in Ukraine, economic ties will not be restored.
Also, according to Okhrimenko, since the beginning of the year, Ukraine’s exports to Russia have fallen by almost 45%, and they will continue to fall.
He added that at the moment the policy of the Kiev authorities is to sever all ties with Russia as much as possible. In fact, every month Kiev suspends the operation of certain agreements, the expert recalled.
Earlier that day, an article by Russian President Vladimir Putin entitled “On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians” was published. In particular, in the publication, the Russian leader reviewed the history of relations between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, stressing that they have repeatedly concluded agreements and developed joint projects to strengthen ties and resolve various problems. Later, however, they began to turn Ukraine into a “bridgehead against Russia,” Putin said.
Relations between Russia and Ukraine have deteriorated after the peninsula became a region of Russia in 2014 following a referendum in Crimea. Then 96.77% of Crimean voters and 95.6% of Sevastopol residents voted for the entry of the peninsula into the Russian Federation. Kiev retains claims to the peninsula, declaring it a temporarily occupied territory. The leadership of the Russian Federation has repeatedly stated that the inhabitants of the region in a democratic way, in full accordance with international law, voted for reunification.
In the same year, Kiev launched a military operation against the residents of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup and the new government in Ukraine. The settlement issues are being discussed in the “Minsk” and “Normandy” formats.
