Today, Wednesday, civilians continue to evacuate the city of Sloviansk in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.
Russian forces moved closer to the city.
“The evacuation is underway. We are taking people out of the city every day,” Vadim Lyach, the city’s mayor, said in a YouTube video.
He added that “there are currently 23,000 people” in Slovyansk, which before the Ukrainian crisis had about 110,000 people, according to the authorities.
The mayor stressed that “the basic infrastructure is still working, but there has been no central water network for a month, and the city has been continuously cut off electricity.”
“The city is well fortified,” he added.
Vitaly, a plumber, said his wife and daughter, who is six months pregnant, were evacuated from Sloviansk on Wednesday.
“I am afraid for my wife,” he said. “We have to leave. I sent my wife and I have no other choice.”
