The European Union commented on the decision of the Belarusian authorities to reduce the staff of the Lithuanian embassy in the republic. The European External Action Service has predicted increased isolation of Minsk due to the policy of President Alexander Lukashenko, reports TASS…
The foreign policy service stressed that the Belarusian leader continues to close diplomatic communication channels for the country. “Also, by reducing the consular staff of the diplomatic missions of the EU member states, the regime limits the possibilities of Belarusians to travel to the EU,” the union noted.
On July 6, it became known that Minsk will reduce to a minimum the diplomatic representation of Lithuania in Belarus. The embassy will leave one consul and three administrative and technical staff. The Belarusian Foreign Ministry concluded that the Lithuanian government has turned its foreign policy into a farce, in which Minsk is not going to participate. In particular, the department called the decision of Vilnius to assign diplomatic status to the office of ex-presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya as absurd.
On July 5, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said that Tikhanovskaya’s office was recognized as “the official representation of the Belarusian democracy”. At the same time, the Belarusian opposition noted that Vilnius “launched a new stage of delegitimizing the regime” of Lukashenka.
