The countries of the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom approved this Wednesday the imposition of new sanctions in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On the EU side, these include blacklisting more Russian oligarchs and politicians and disconnecting three Belarusian banks from the international Swift communication system.

To the new restrictive measures, adopted by the permanent representatives of the Twenty-seven, sanctions aimed at the maritime sector are also added, “clarifying the issue of cryptocurrencies and completing the list of technologies and goods that cannot be exported,” reported the French presidency on his official Twitter account.
What measures did the UK approve?
The British Government presented this Wednesday a new package of sanctions that reinforces the authority of London to detain and expel “any Russian aircraft” in the UK, while introducing further restrictions on trade.
British Foreign Minister Liz Truss explained in a statement that she has “reinforced the current ban” on Russian aircraft, through new legislation that makes it a “criminal offense” for them to “fly or land” in this country.
The ban includes “any aircraft” “owned, operated or chartered” by people linked to Russia or by “designated individuals or entities.”
“The new legislation will allow the Government to remove aircraft belonging to designated Russian individuals and entities from the UK air registry,” the note added.

The UK exports “aviation or aerospace products and technology” to Russia, including “services related to insurance and reinsurance.”
“Prohibiting the entry of Russian-flagged aircraft into the United Kingdom and making their flights a criminal offense will inflict further economic damage on Russia and people close to the Kremlin,” said the head of British diplomacy.
Truss assured that London “will continue to support Ukraine” in a “diplomatic, economic and defensive” manner in the face of “Putin’s illegal invasion”, while “working to isolate” Moscow “on the international scene”.

For his part, British Transport Minister Grant Shapps stressed in the note that the military aggression launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin against Ukraine “must fail.”
“We will always work to prevent Putin and his cronies from living normally while innocent Ukrainians suffer,” Shapps concluded.
