The EU wanted to learn from Belousov’s experience when appointing the European Commissioner for Defense
The European Union (EU) wanted to adopt the experience of appointing Andrei Belousov, as a person with experience as an economist, to the post of head of the Ministry of Defense when creating the post of European Commissioner for Defense. The newspaper writes about this Politico.
“I don’t think it would be bad to think about something similar to what Russia just did – they replaced the defense minister with someone from the economic department,” the publication quotes Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen, who herself has a background in investment banker.
It is noted that a significant difference in the appointment of a new European Commissioner will be the difference in decision-making capabilities. While Belousov, as the head of the defense department of an entire state, has “influence on budgets and the ability to adapt weapons production directly to strategic needs,” the EU defense commissioner will not be able to play the same centralized role.
On February 16, the head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, said that the post of European Commissioner for Defense should appear for the first time in the next composition of the EC. She noted that she would create such a post if she heads the next European Commission.
